Fresh research suggests recent panic over AI-generated malware may be overblown. Last month Anthropic detailed how Russia-linked cyberespionage group Midnight Blizzard used Claude to rebuild malware each time security tools flagged its backdoor as malign. “We observed GTG-20006 operate through customized AI-driven workflows that automated much of their operations from development, infrastructure acquisition, phishing, persistence through command and control, to data exfiltration,” the AI company wrote in its report, referring to Midnight Blizzard, aka APT29 and Cozy Bear, as GTG-20006.…
Using AI safely
- Know which AI tools your organisation uses, and what data goes into them.
- Treat AI agents like any other identity: least privilege, logging and a named owner.
- Test AI features for prompt injection and data leakage before customers reach them.

Phishing
Initial AccessWhat a defender checks
- Search mail flow for the sender, subject and links, and pull every copy from mailboxes.
- Check who clicked or replied, and what signed in afterwards.
- Block the sender and URLs, and tell staff what to look for.

Command and ControlWhat a defender checks
- Hunt for beaconing: regular connections to rare domains.
- Check DNS logs for newly registered and look-alike domains.
- Block known C2 infrastructure from your threat intelligence.
