The security engineer certification that replaced AZ-500 in 2026 – now covering AI workloads as well as cloud. You learn to secure identity, secrets and governance, storage, databases and networks, servers, containers and application platforms, and the data and agents behind AI, then monitor posture with Defender for Cloud and Sentinel.

What the exam covers
Weightings are Microsoft’s. SC-500 replaced AZ-500, which retired on 31 August 2026.

Manage identity, access and governance 20–25% of the exam
PIM, Conditional Access and authentication methods, application and managed identities, Key Vault, Azure Policy and regulatory compliance, RBAC, backup protection and infrastructure as code.

Secure storage, databases and networking 25–30% of the exam
Storage and Azure SQL security with Defender, network security groups, Virtual Network Manager, VPN and Virtual WAN, Entra Private Access, private endpoints, Private Link and Azure Firewall.

Secure compute 20–25% of the exam
Securing AI – oversharing, DSPM for AI, Copilot Studio agents, Entra Agent ID, AI Gateway and Defender for AI Services – plus servers and VMs, containers, AKS, Functions, App Service and WAF.

Manage and monitor security posture 20–25% of the exam
Defender CSPM, compliance frameworks, workload protection plans, AWS and GCP connectors, vulnerability management and EASM, Sentinel collection and automation, and Security Copilot.

About the exam
- You need a score of 700 or more to pass.
- Microsoft offers a free practice assessment and an exam sandbox for most exams – use both before you book.
- The exam fee is not included. It is paid to Microsoft when you book.
- Associate and Expert certifications are valid for a year. You renew them free of charge with an online assessment on Microsoft Learn.
